Sculptra

Sculptra™ is a cosmetic injectable treatment, but it is not the same as a dermal filler. It is in fact what is known as a tissue stimulator, which gives subtle results and rejuvenation to your face over time. This is because it has an effect on the production of collagen in your skin, revitalising and setting off the production of new skin cells which give a more natural-looking appearance and youthful rejuvenation.

With Sculptra we are not attempting to change your facial contouring, or make you look different, we are aiming to bring back the younger you. Bringing in photographs of yourself from five or ten years ago when you have your consultation with our nurse, Kerry, will allow you both to discuss how you previously looked, what you hope to obtain back from treatment and the kind of results you can expect to achieve with Sculptra. With this treatment, we are looking to help you to turn back time. Your friends and family will wonder what your secret is and why you look so well!

Sculptra is a biocompatible and biodegradable injectable material known as Poly-L-Lactic acid (PLLA) that naturally stimulates your cells to produce their own collagen. The result gives a more youthful and natural-looking appearance, refreshing the way you look, restoring your skin’s own natural contours and smoothing out wrinkles.

Unlike dermal filler treatments, which we also offer at Aesthetic Solutions, Sculptra works differently and isn’t about filling lines and wrinkles or revolumising instantly. It replenishes lost volume by stimulating growth of your own natural collagen to treat the underlying causes of facial ageing.

Sculptra Questions

  • What is Sculptra?

As we age we lose facial volume, leading to the loss of the natural, youthful curves and contours of the face. Sculptra, is an injectable product made from Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) which works gradually to restore facial structure over a series of treatments, by stimulating the production and growth of new collagen in your face.

Sculptra allows you to gradually create a natural look that lasts up to 2 years, based on clinical studies. It does not use any human or animal components and no allergy testing is needed prior to treatments.

  • How is Sculptra administered?

Sculptra is an injectable procedure. An average of 3 treatment sessions are needed, with an interval of 4 to 6 weeks between each session, where the product will work to produce a refined, more youthful-looking appearance. The number of sessions will vary per person, depending on the result you and your practitioner are looking to achieve. Our nurse, Kerry will advise you of a proposed treatment plan during your initial consultation, but the makers recommend one vial of PLLA per ten years of age to achieve the best results, so for example, a fifty-year-old may need five vials over five treatment sessions.

The procedure is much like other cosmetic injectable treatments, such as dermal fillers, but some patients do feel a brief stinging sensation at the point of injection as the PLLA is delivered. We can help to manage any discomfort with topical anaesthetic cream.

  • What parts of the face does Sculptra treat?

Sculptra replaces lost collagen in the middle to lower face and chin area. It can be used to treat the temples in the upper face, for cheek augmentation, volumising under the cheek area and nasolabial (nose-to-mouth) in the mid-face. It can also be used in the lower part of the face in marionette lines (mouth-to-chin), the jaw line and where jowling is starting to form at the edges of the chin area.

  • Are there any side effects?

Allergies are rare. The most common side effects include tenderness, bleeding, redness, bruising or swelling at the site of the injections, lasting an average 2 - 6 days. A possible, delayed side effect from PLLA is the appearance of papules or granulomas – these are small bumps under the skin which are usually invisible. As with any injectable procedure there is a risk of infection.

  • What is the aftercare?

Should you need them, ice packs can be used within the first 24 hours after treatment. You will need to massage the treated area for 5 minutes, twice a day for one month, using a recommended cream to reduce friction on the skin. You must avoid excessive UV exposure, both sun and artificial tanning beds.

  • Who should not have Sculptra?

You should not be treated with Sculptra if you have a known allergy to Poly-L-Lactic acid or other severe allergies. We will not be able to treat you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Those patients who are on high doses of steroids or blood thinners will also not be suitable candidates for treatments. A full medical history will be taken during your consultation.

  • How long does it last?

Results from Sculptra are not immediate; it is not a dermal filler, it is a tissue stimulator. Skin thickness increases 4-6 weeks after treatment, continuing for up to 10 months. A programme of more than one treatment session is recommended to obtain the desired results. Results can last up to 2 - 3 years after the last treatment.

  • How much does it cost?

Prices for Scuptra treatment will depend on the number of vials required but range from £395 - £790.
