Dermal Fillers

As we age, both men and women, lose volume in their faces – this causes lines and wrinkles to appear and the skin starts to sag, or jowl around the jawline. But panic not, the practitioners at Aesthetic Solutions in Truro are here to help. After a consultation to access your needs, we can offer you dermal filler treatment to rejuvenate your facial contours and add back the missing volume.

Dermal fillers, also called soft tissue fillers, are injectable treatments which we can use to address deeper lines and wrinkles. This can be achieved either by plumping up the lines themselves, or by adding back volume to an area of the face, such as the upper cheek or lips. We use products that consist of a substance that is found naturally in the body called Hyaluronic Acid (HA). HA is very clever and has properties that allow it to bind with water, this means that it can hydrate the skin, and it promotes softness and an appearance of fullness to the face. Our bodies produce hyaluronic acid every day, but as we age we produce less of it. Children and young people have a more plumped appearance to their skin because they produce the maximum amount of daily HA, but this youthful softness to the skin is reduced as we age as we produce far less than we did as children. But the good news is that we can help to put it back and bring back some youthful qualities to your skin, using injectable HA-based products.

Our nurse practitioner, Kerry, has been treating with dermal fillers since 2000, and has vast experience in the best techniques and products to use. The products that we use at Aesthetic Solutions include the Juvéderm™ Hylacross (ULTRA, SMILE) and Juvéderm™ Vycross ranges, the latter includes Juvéderm Voluma, Volift, Volite and Volbella. We also use the Belotero™ and Restylane™ range. These products come from reputable pharmaceutical companies and are all hyaluronic acid based. This means that they are temporary, non-permanent dermal fillers which are clinically proven to be effective and safe.

"We try and provide a softer and fresher appearance, rather than an overfilled plastic appearance. We want our patients to say that they look ‘well’ rather than to appear over treated or odd looking”; says Kerry.

Dermal Fillers Questions

  • What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Youthful skin is rich in a naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid (HA) - this molecule both attracts water and binds with it, acting to hydrate the skin. It is sometimes referred to as “nature’s moisturiser” as it acts to increase the softness and fullness of the skin, most notably in the face and hands. As we age, the hyaluronic acid that we produce in our bodies becomes reduced and less efficient, leading to a loss of volume in the tissues and facial wrinkles. Products which contain hyaluronic acid have been developed which are safe and long lasting and can be injected back into the body to replace was has been lost. Used widely in general medicine as well as cosmetic use, it is estimated that over 30 million people have been treated with hyaluronic acid to lubricate joints or restore lost tissue volume.

Brands that we use at Aesthetic Solutions, such as Juvéderm® (Ultra, Smile, Voluma, Volift, Volite and Volbella), Belotero® and Restylane® are known as dermal fillers and contain non-animal derived hyaluronic acid. Many also contain a local anaesthetic ingredient to provide pain relief during treatment. These newer brands of dermal fillers give softer results, as well as causing less discomfort and bruising for our patients.

  • What happens during dermal filler treatment and how long does it take?

Initial discussion with our practitioner, Kerry, should clearly set out expectations of treatment and achievable results. During your initial consultation your full medical history will be noted. Dermal fillers are injected into the areas which require plumping out and are used to fill the nose-to-mouth lines and mouth-to-chin lines as well as being used to produce shapely and fuller lips. A topical anaesthetic cream or a lidocaine injection may be given prior to the injectable procedure to reduce discomfort. The treatment takes 15-30 minutes and most people can return to work immediately after the procedure. Full written aftercare instructions will be given to you following your procedure.

  • Are there any side effects from hyaluronic acid-based fillers?

Side effects from dermal filler injections are rare, but not uncommon, you may expect to experience temporary redness, swelling, itching, bruising, skin discolouration and/or pain at the injection site(s). This should typically resolve, by itself, one or two days after treatment. Severe allergic reactions, complications or infections, although rarer, do occur, and if any of the side effects that you experience after treatment last longer than 48 to 72 hours, you should get in touch with us again for a check-up.

As hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the human body, your metabolism will break down the dermal filler over time and eventually it will disappear.

  • Who should not have this treatment?

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a history of severe allergies, or known allergy to hyaluronic acid, you will not be suitable for treatment. Some connective tissue disorders may also cause a higher risk of side effects or complications. Your medical history will be discussed in your initial consultation.

  • How long do the results last for dermal fillers?

Dermal filler products which contain hyaluronic acid normally last between 6 and 12 months, sometimes longer, depending on where they have been placed and the specific product used. As hyaluronic acid is completely broken down by the body over a period of months, re-treatment is required to maintain results.

  • Does it hurt?

A topical anaesthetic cream or an injection of the local anaesthetic lidocaine, (like the ones you get at the dentist), may be given prior to the dermal filler injection procedure to reduce any discomfort. Most of the dermal filler products that we now use contain lidocaine within the syringe, so this automatically makes the treatment far more comfortable for patients.

  • Aftercare

You will be asked to avoid drinking alcohol or taking aspirin for 24 hours after treatment; paracetamol can be taken if you require pain relief. You should also avoid wearing make-up for at least 12 hours, longer if you can manage it. You will need to avoid strenuous exercise in the first 48 hours after treatment, and should avoid saunas/steam rooms, jacuzzis/hot tubs, swimming and spa treatments, such as facials, for 2 weeks after treatment with dermal fillers. Avoidance of extended sun exposure is also recommended immediately following treatment. We will provide you with full aftercare instructions before you leave our clinic.

  • What is the cost?

Prices for dermal fillers at Aesthetic Solutions range from £210 - £315, depending on the variant and amount of product required.
