Dermaroller Medical Skin-Needling

We use micro-medical skin-needling or collagen induction therapy, using the Genuine Dermaroller™, for natural skin regeneration and scar repair therapy. Dermaroller uses advanced medical-grade micro-needle technology, mounted on a roller or pen device, to stimulate the skin, encouraging it to repair and regenerate itself through natural means. The controlled micro-trauma caused by the tiny needles sets off the natural healing cascade which sends more oxygenated blood to the area, fires off growth factors and stimulates collagen and fibroblasts, the building blocks of new skin layers. Over time, this safely creates a smoother, healthier and younger-looking skin with visible improvement to depressions, scars and skin damage.

Dermaroller can be used to treat sun-damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles on the face and décolletage, as well as treating acne scars and stretchmarks on the body.

Genuine Dermaroller

We use a variety of different Dermaroller devices, which have micro-needles of differing lengths. In clinic, our trained specialists can use Dermarollers with needles which penetrate the skin up to 3mm deep for a professional treatment which can optimise skin regeneration. We can also offer home use options with 0.02mm length micro-needles to maintain your results longer term.

We recommend a programme of 2 to 3 professional Dermaroller treatment sessions, spaced 6 weeks apart to achieve optimum results. Some scar treatments may require more sessions, up to approximately five.

Dermaroller™ Questions

  • What is Dermaroller?

Dermaroller, or Genuine Dermaroller™ to give it its full name, is a German-made, medical grade skin-needling device range. The surgical steel needles are fitted to either a roller or pen-like head and come with varying lengths for targeting different areas. Needle lengths also determine the difference between Dermarollers used in clinic by medical professionals (with needles that can go into the skin up to 3mm deep) and those available for use at home (going 0.02mm deep). All devices are used for micro medical skin-needling, also called collagen induction therapy. Dermarollers are designed to cause controlled damaged in the skin layers which encourages the body to commence the healing process, rebuilding new collagen and skin tissue in the area targeted to repair sun damage or scarring.

  • How is medical micro-needling administered?

To make sure that treatment is as painless as possible, we will apply a topical anaesthetic or numbing cream to your skin before commencing treatment. Depending on the Dermaroller device being used – the roller, or our newer pen device – our practitioner will administer the tiny micro-needles into the skin, one small section at a time. This takes as little as 10 minutes to complete for individual scars or small areas, or as much as an hour, for larger areas such as the chest (décolletage) or when treating stretch marks, for example.

  • Which parts of the face and body does Dermaroller treat?

Medical skin needling can be used anywhere on the face and body. Devices come with differing lengths of needles which means they can even be used on more sensitive areas using a shorter needle. Acne scarring, sun damage, plus fine lines and wrinkles can all be treated on the face and chest, or female décolletage area. We can also treat stretch marks on the abdomen and thighs using Dermaroller. Depending on the area and problem being addressed you will need between 2 and 3 treatment sessions, with approximately a 6-week gap in between each session. Scarring, such as stretch marks, usually requires more sessions, up to approximately 5.

  • Are there any side effects?

You should expect your skin to look and feel like you have sunburn. It will be pink or red in appearance and tender to the touch, with slight swelling. Bruising is rare. The redness and soreness will fade in the first 12 hours after treatment but may persist a little for 48 to 72 hours. You will be given a programme of professional skin creams as your aftercare package to aid healing and calm the skin.

  • How much does it cost?

Prices for Genuine Dermaroller treatment vary depending on the size of the area being treated. A full-face treatment will cost £300. Face, neck, chest (décolletage) and hands will cost £400 and stretchmark treatments start from £300. Treatment sessions using the pen device start from £75.

  • Who should not have Dermaroller?

You will not be suitable for Dermaroller treatment if you have an active skin infection, such as an outbreak of the herpes simplex virus (cold sores). If you have a history of getting cold sores we can give you a 5-day course of acyclovir before you have treatment to avoid inducing an outbreak. If you have a history of problems with skin healing, have been taking isotretinoin within the last 6 months, or are taking high dose blood thinners and/or steroids, you will not be suitable for treatment.

  • What is the aftercare?

Following treatment, you will be given various professional skin creams to aid your skin healing.

  • How long does it last?

Results are long-lasting as the correction is all done by your own body, creating new, healthy skin and tissue. Without further treatments you can expect results to last 2 or 3 years. You can maintain these results somewhat using home-use Dermaroller products, but we recommend a top-up or maintenance style professional skin needling treatment one or twice a year after your initial treatment programme. Results continue to improve over time as your body produces new collagen in the areas targeted.
