Pain Free Laser Hair Removal

Wouldn’t it be nice if you no longer had to worry about repeatedly shaving, plucking or waxing unwanted hair on your body? Well, you can, because now there is a comfortable and affordable way to reduce unwanted hair using Soprano Pain-Free, Hair-Free™ laser hair removal, which is available at Aesthetic Solutions in Truro, Cornwall.

Hair removal, using laser technology, which is suitable for both men and women, is one of the longest-studied and well-known treatments available in aesthetic clinics. Technology varies, with many different devices currently being used; some have great efficacy at eliminating hair growth, whilst some do not. That is why we use a market-leading device from Alma Lasers, called the Soprano laser, which not only offers a pain-free experience, but also targets multiple hair types with speed and great results.

Although we can treat any area of the body where you have unwelcome or unwanted hair, we commonly treat bikini lines, underarms and legs in women, with more and more men also wanting to reduce unwanted hair on their backs, necks, arms and hands. Whilst women may look for complete removal of hair growth in an area, this is not always possible for everyone, however laser hair removal will significantly reduce hair in an area, eventually making it finer, slower growing and more sparse in nature by up to 70%, leaving just a small amount of fine hair remaining in the area. The number of sessions required will depend on the area treated and the response that we get from your hair type. Men usually look for smaller reduction in the amount of hair that they have in an area, down to what they perceive as ‘manly enough’, and this can be done with fewer treatment sessions.

Women can also experience increased facial hair, often due to hormonal changes, such as the menopause, and this can be addressed using laser hair removal. We also offer a unique service to our transgender clients, many of whom can seek an NHS referral to us for laser hair removal as part of their feminisation treatment programme.

Laser hair removal is also great for addressing the cosmetic appearance of, and relieving discomfort from folliculitis, shaving rash, skin irritation, plus redness and bumps from shaving or waxing.

The best type of hair to respond to laser treatment is darker hair, but this does not mean that we won’t get a good result with lighter hair colours, (not grey or white though as it needs to have some pigment for the laser light to be drawn towards). You will need a patch test to assess your suitability.

Laser Hair Removal Questions

  • What is the Soprano Laser Treatment?

The Soprano laser from the leading cosmetic laser manufacturer, Alma Lasers, offers a Pain-Free, Hair-Free™ solution to unwanted hair. This treatment has now been used on thousands of patients worldwide because it removes unwanted hair quickly and comfortably.

It works by gently heating up the hair follicles in the targeted area, such as the legs, underarms, back or abdomen using gentle pulses of laser energy which is delivered via a handpiece that is constantly in motion. It’s this continued motion, performed by our specialist practitioner, that means that the laser energy delivery is gentler and virtually pain-free. Some people liken it to a ‘hot stone massage’, a tolerable warming experience. Treatment this way is also quick, usually taking under an hour to complete each appointment, and because it’s non-invasive you can return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment with us.

Results are long-lasting and effective for all skin types and hair types, the makers of the laser also note that it can be used on those with tanned skin, but we would recommend a conservative approach and suggest that you avoid sun or sunless tanning if you are considering laser hair removal treatment to avoid possible reactions. Soprano laser hair removal is perfect for any area of the body, and we can even treat sensitive areas such as the bikini line, face and neck.

  • What will happen if I decide to have the treatment?

During the initial consultation with our specialist practitioner, you will need to complete a medical information form and discuss your medical history to make sure that you are suitable for laser hair removal treatment. The area of your body where unwanted hair bothers you will be reviewed and discussed, along with your expectations from treatment. The practitioner will then tell you if these results are achievable with your skin and hair type.

  • Will I need a patch test?

Yes. After your consultation, assuming there is no reason why you cannot medically go ahead with treatment, you will be given a patch test. This involves treating a small section on the area(s) that will be treated. The patch test area will be shaved, a gel smeared on and the handpiece of the Soprano laser machine will be moved back and forth across the area for about one minute. The patch test is performed to assess the reaction of your skin to the energy delivered by the laser. If after one week the patch test result is clear, then you can proceed with a treatment programme.

  • Is it safe?

Laser hair removal is a safe treatment, with minimal risks. You can expect long-lasting results after a series of short treatment sessions over a total period of 6 to 9 months.

Unlike Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments, our laser is safe and effective on skin types I to IV. This means that we can treat tanned Caucasian skin, as well as Mediterranean, Asian and Afro-Caribbean skin tones safely. IPL carries risks for darker skin colours.

  • Do I need to shave before the treatment?

The area to be treated needs to be shaved 24 hours before treatment. If treatment is under the arms, i.e. in the armpit, please avoid wearing deodorant or anti-perspirant. Do not tweeze, wax, bleach or use depilatory creams for 3 weeks before your treatment.

  • How many treatments are needed?

An individual hair goes through several stages during it’s growth cycle. This includes the anagen or growing stage, the catagen or intermediate stage, and telogen which is the resting or shedding stage. This full growth cycle takes about 4 to 6 weeks from start to finish. To target each individual hair at the point in its growth cycle when it is most responsive to the laser light, during the growing stage, you will need a programme of a minimum 6 to 9 treatment sessions spaced 3 to 8 weeks apart. We do find that clients require an occasional ‘top-up’ treatment, once the initial course is complete, every 3-4 months to maintain the reduction and to address any hairs that did not respond completely during the treatment cycles.

Depending on your hair type and response to treatment, you may still need to shave the treated area, just not as often as before treatment. For example, daily leg shaving would be reduced to once a week or once every couple of weeks.

Hair can never be permanently removed with laser hair removal, but will be significantly reduced, and will not return to its original growth rate or hair thickness, resulting in fewer and finer hairs which grow more slowly.

  • Who should not have laser hair removal treatment?

If you are pregnant or suffering from cold sores in the area to be treated or are on certain photosensitive medications you will not be suitable for laser hair removal treatment. Those clients undergoing treatment for cancer will also not be able to have treatment

We also discourage you from having an active tan or using fake tanning creams at the time of treatment. Your treatment programme will be delayed in this instance for the purposes of safety.

  • Are there any side effects?

Skin redness and slight itching following laser hair removal treatment are quite common, but usually clear very quickly. Occasional crusting of a small area can occur. More serious complications, such as blistering, scarring, hyperpigmentation (darker areas of skin colour) are all very rare.

  • What is the aftercare?

You will need to do the following after laser hair removal treatments.

    • Be gentle to the treated area.
    • Avoid hot water, shaving and strenuous activities in the treated area for 24 hours.
    • Protect the area from direct exposure to sun or artificial ultraviolet light, such as sunbeds, for 3 weeks prior to treatment and 3 weeks post-treatment using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with total block protection. Tanning after treatment sessions may result in skin discolorations.
    • Discontinue the use of tweezers, bleaches, waxing products or depilatory creams 3 weeks prior to treatment and during your treatment programme. Hair may be cut or shaved during this time.
    • Apply aloe vera gel or hydrocortisone cream to treated areas to ease any temporary discomfort.
    • Ice packs may be applied if swelling occurs after treatment sessions.
    • Mineral make-up may be applied immediately after laser hair removal treatment to the face, unless blistering or crusting develops.
    • Skin will be sensitive post-treatment, so special care should be taken whilst removing any make-up to avoid damaging the skin and risking infection. If you can avoid the use of make-up it is preferable.
    • If a blister develops, please contact the clinic immediately.
