The appearance of thread, spider or thin red veins on the legs are a common problem, particularly affecting women. These small veins can form anywhere on the leg, from the top of the thigh to the ankle, and everywhere in between.
While these veins do not pose any serious health problems, and are not to be confused with varicose veins, they can cause some discomfort for some people, such as minor aching in the leg, and are considered cosmetically unsightly by many.
Having thread veins on your legs can lead to a feeling on self-consciousness and embarrassment, particularly in the summer months when both men and women tend to exposure their legs more, wearing shorts and skirts. Thankfully, there is a solution and many people are delighted with the results that we can achieve in reducing spider veins in the legs with microsclerotherapy.
Our aesthetic nurse, Kerry is a member of the British Association of Sclerotherapists and has significant training and experience in delivering this injectable treatment for the removal of thread veins in the legs.
Micro-sclerotherapy involves the injection, into the tiny thread veins, of a special substance called a sclerosant. This creates a foam inside the thread veins, causing the vein walls to stick together and close so blood can no longer flow through them. The body eventually metabolises this damaged tissue and the spider veins disappear. This treatment can only be used for thread veins on the legs, not the face. We can offer electrolysis treatment for facial thread veins.

During a consultation with our specialist nurse Kerry, your medical history will be recorded, and treatment details discussed. Kerry will use a doppler (ultrasound device) to check the thread veins are suitable for treatment. Your measurements will also be taken so that we can give you the correct size of support socks or hosiery for your aftercare package. We will make an appointment for your treatment.
During your treatment appointment we will take photographs of the thread veins to add to your patient record. A small amount of sclerosing solution is injected directly into the thread vein using a special type of syringe with a tiny, very fine gauge needle. The solution causes the vessel to become irritated and swell shut, stopping the blood from re-entering the vein.
Following the injection a pressure bandage may be applied, depending on the size of the vein. You will then be instructed to walk around the clinic for 10 minutes. Kerry, will also arrange a review appointment with you.

Microsclerotherapy is a medical procedure during which a small amount of special sclerosing solution is injected directly into a thread vein using a special type of syringe with a tiny, very fine gauge needle. This treatment can be performed on thread veins on the legs but cannot be used where they present on the face, alternative treatment options including electrolysis are offered for facial thread veins.
This sclerosant solution that we use at Aesthetic Solutions has been used with great success for many years in Europe and in the United States and is considered safe and effective for the removal of spider or thread veins.
The solution causes the tiny vein to become irritated and swell shut, stopping the blood from re-entering the vein. Eventually the body will remove the damaged vein and the appearance of thread veins under the skin will disappear. Following the injection, a pressure bandage may be applied, depending on the size of the vein(s) treated.
You will usually where support hose, such as socks or tights, for about a week after treatment. Treated veins will disappear within two weeks to two months.
More than one treatment is usually needed - although most thread veins can be treated over the course of two treatment sessions, each taking around 30 to 60 minutes. For very extensive thread veins a maximum of six treatments could be necessary - rarely more.
During microsclerotherapy treatment patients report minor discomfort as the scleroscant solution is injected, with perhaps a very slight to moderate burning or stinging sensation, which disappears within a few seconds.
Most people experience no adverse effects; however, some minor side effects have been reported.
These include slightly raised areas at the site of injection which heal within a day or so, or temporary bruising around the treatment area which usually resolves rapidly. Very rarely, a small dark area of pigmentation resembling a freckle may remain. These spots, however, usually resolve in time or respond to treatment with skin lightening agents. Development of tiny networks of fine red vessels near the injection site or larger vessels can very occasionally occur. Most resolve spontaneously or resolve with additional microsclerotherapy injection treatment. Allergic reactions to the sclerosant solutions are rare.
Thread veins may recur. Often, however, it may seem that a previously injected vessel has recurred, when in fact a new thread vein has appeared in the same area.
Patients who are not suitable for microsclerotherapy treatment include: asthmatics, epileptics, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with a history of severe allergies. You should not fly from 2 weeks post treatment or sunbathe for one month.
